AGUMBE TERRITORIAL RANGE OFFICIALS ARREST SAMBAR POACHER

In the Agumbe territorial range of Shivamogga Circle, Karnataka, a poacher was arrested for hunting and killing a Sambar (a Schedule-III species) at Yelimane beat of Megharvalli section. A habitual offender, Dilip was apprehended when the night patrolling team were carrying out their rounds around 9.30-10 pm on Wednesday. 

According to Range Forest Officer, Uma S, the offender has been booked under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and has been produced before the court on Thursday. This range has about 5-6 herds of Sambhar including many individuals. Further, there is a healthy number of leopards in the Agumbe territorial range.

The forest officials have sought a judicial custody of 15 days. The offender hailing from Nallur village had killed the adult antelope which weighed about 100 Kg for its meat, said the RFO. Uma added, “Our preliminary investigations have revealed that he had hunted the animal for its meat and self-consumption. We had information about this offender and earlier, he had escaped. This time, he couldn’t escape as our night patrolling team managed to catch him red handed him along with the dead animal and his gun.”
